Help with crochet blanket

Hello
Can anyone suggest a yarn type for a crochet blanket i'm thinking of making?  I'm new to crochet and have just crocheted a scarf using Rowan 'wool cotton' and 'cashsoft' and would love to use this but it would be very expensive i'm thinking.  Should i use a chunkier yarn so less yarn is used?  Some suggestions of brands and types would be most helpful.  Thank you!

Hi, if you are just useing a treble stitch, any double knitting wool will be fine, especially if it is for a blanket. double knitting wool can be very cheap in markets. i hope this is of some help, let me know.

Hello

Just new to the site, and noticed your message.   I love to crochet blankets by using the patchwork style in order to feel comfortable with the yarn and the crochet hook.   I usually like to use either a 3.50mm or 4.00 mm hook and with a DK yarn weight.  However, as beginners adore to create a piece quickly, use a larger 5.00mm or 5.50mm hook with a chunky weight wool.  I also love to work with acrylic wool in crazy colours, so choose two DK weight wools and work with two strands together.   this will produce a tweed effect and looks very different.  I love to recycle wools, and so love to visit the charity shops or buy at the sales, when I can afford the yarn with wool content.   One thing about shopping for wool is this, you have the chance to 'feel' the yarn and hold the wool in the bag.  So, personally I would select an acrylic yarn and a wool yarn, so that the finished piece will wash easily. Or how about mixing an acrylic with a mohair which should be easier on the hook, as mohair can be a hairy yarn to work with.   Truth to tell, I just love to use the wool in £stretcher which can be bought £2 for a bag of 4x50g balls of acrylic yarn.  Quick and easy to work with and a pleasure to wash.  I use a 3.50mm or 4.00mm hook work a few chains, then a row of trebles and hey presto I continue working using trebles until I want a change of colour.   Also, if you are near a library or booksellers, keep an eye out for crochet books and adapt the patterns.    Once you have experimented with the yarn and the hook and feel comfortable it's great and very very very relaxing.    Have you seen the magazine Knit today, as it has some great knitting and crochet patterns and is only about £4.

Hope this helps happy crocheting.
