my favourite thread for crotchet is cotton. however after washing the item no ammount of stretching will get my work the same original size.its so annoying as the difference is quite considerable. i tried preshrinking the cotton ball before i use it and found that my work does not shrink as much but still it always ends up smaller than the original.

You may be washing the work at too high a temperature. |Try using a lower temperature as if you were handwashing wool and use a mild soap powder. I have a box of powder called "Kind Wash" made by Sainsburys. I always use this for washing hand needlework projects and have always found it works well.
